COST OF LUXURY VS NECESSITY
The fascination with luxury goods as markers of wealth isn’t new, but social media has turned it into a public spectacle.
Consider an Hermès bag that recently sold at auction for the price of a median U.S. home. This isn’t just a comparison between a handbag and a house—it’s a revealing commentary on how we assign value to money, status, and the optics of success.
Meanwhile, in 2023, the average U.S. household spent $77,280 annually, or about $6,440 per month. The cost of a single Chanel purse, often viewed as a symbol of wealth and aspiration, could instead cover fundamental necessities like food and healthcare for months. This stark contrast underscores the growing divide between aspirational consumption and the basic costs of living, raising pressing questions about societal priorities and economic inequality.
